On May 16th and 17th, Pro Igel will organize the third conference "All about the Hedgehog"
in Muenster/Westfalia. There will be talks in German by scientists and vets and presentations
by experienced hedgehog carers.
We invite all German speaking hedgehog friends, carers and interested people working on or are engaged for
animal protection and ecology concerning hedgehogs.

Attention, new medicaments!
Since 10/2006 the product Citarin-L 10% by the manufacturer Bayer, the operant
medicinal product against lungworm infestation, is no longer available in trade.
The active substance Levamisol is still available in the German veterinary drug
trade. At present it is contained in three Levamisol-injection medicinal products
which are produced by other pharmaceutical manufacturers in the same 10% solution.:
Levamisol 10 (Firma CP-Pharma, Firma medistar-Arzneimittel-Vertrieb GmbH,
Firma WDT)
Belamisol 10 (Firma BelaPharm)
Nematovet 10 (Firma aniMedica GmbH, Firma Klat-Chemie-Vertrieb GmbH)
All three injection solutions are ten percent, so the solution should be diluted for
better compatibility and dosage with distilled water or electrolyte solution in
proportion 1:4. 1ml Levamisol 10% + 3ml of the dilution substance make the field
tested 2,5 % solution. Only mix small quantities! To use within 24 hours!

New Pro Igel publication!"Igel-Geburtstags-Kalender"
Informative, practical, good-looking – the everlasting birthday calendar of Pro Igel
has been released recently. The Cologne artist Nora Appenzeller created twelve
watercolours presenting a year in the life of a hedgehog in emphatic pictures.
Short texts clearly describe the life of the hedgehogs for each month in the year.
The calendar has the size ISO A-4. Underneath the illustrations there is much room
for noting down personal anniversaries, birthdays and other dates.

New German publication!Igel gefunden - was nun?
As a completion of its companions Cadmos-Edition published a book about hedgehogs
and help for hedgehogs. The author is the journalist and specialist in German philology
Claudia Biermann. With her knowledge of Pro Igel publishings she drew up an attractive
book. One can sometimes notice that the author herself doesn´t have any practical
experience with hedgehogs. So she asked the experts of the Hedgehog Centre Zurich for
help who gave their fundamental know-how so that the book could be written mainly without
mistakes. Besides chapters about biology and hedgehog care the hedgehog-friendly garden
and dangers for hedgehogs are outlined. Some special topics like baby-raising were
omitted. As well as in the chapter about diseases the author doesn´t go into detail,
just describes some symptoms and insists in a veterinary treatment. She doesn´t dare
give veterinary advice herself. The book is richly illustrated with coloured photos
and made up clearly and attractively.

New German publication!Wake up little hedgehog!
Bilingual teaching opens new opportunities. Learning via pictures is appropriate
in the second and third grades of primary school. In this case the hedgehog was chosen –
didactically successfully and factually excellently prepared. "The Little Hedgehog"
for the interdisciplinary schooling in English is almost without any mistakes.
Obviously the authors informed themselves well about the topic. They name relevant
reference books and refer to Pro Igel. In the preface they point to mistakes in texts
and photos (they had better avoided them at all). At first the book is about the
understanding of a story about hedgehogs, emphasising their nightly activities,
unfortunately naming apples and frogs as their food which is definitely wrong. The
topic hedgehog is completely and correctly talked over. Except for the fruit all the
facts are correct starting from the spines to the course of the year. The hints for
overwintering and hibernating are correct, too. The chapters Arts, Games, Movement
contain good ideas for creative works, playing and music. The book is illustrated
with nice drawings. If the mistakes and errors are corrected with the next printing
edition, it would be a nearly perfect work.
